Abstract

When a group of rocks is subjected to a definite set of externally controlled conditions, the rocks should show variations in mineral composition corresponding to their chemical variations. In equilibrium, there should be a definite relationship between the chemical and the mineral compositions of rocks. In this case, the term chemical composition refers only to components that are not mobile. If a rock is open to H2O, for example, its H2O content varies with the external conditions.
