The Detection of Chromosomal Sex in Hermaphrodites from a Skin Biopsy

  • Chapter
Problems of Birth Defects

Abstract

A CASE of hermaphroditism presents to the physician an exceedingly difficult problem. The tragic status of the patient demands that measures be taken to correct the developmental error, in so far as this is possible. There is little agreement, however, concerning the etiology of hermaphroditism, the criteria on which a decision as to the dominant sex are to be based, or the management of individual cases, in brief, the problem of hermaphroditism appears to have reached an impasse and a new approach is desirable.
