Abstract

It was taken for granted earlier (Chapter 1) that the soil-plant-air continuum is a study unit of value in discussing transfers of water, minerals and energy. It is now worth focusing on the first part of the continuum in the light of the processes of soil formation, but with a view to understanding nutrient flow to plants and ecosystems.
