Abstract

Aluminium [Al(III)] is the third most abundant element as well as the most abundant metal-ion on the Earth’s crust. Apparently, Al(III) has no useful biological functions. However, few papers, as well as preliminary data from our laboratory, seem to indicate a possible role of Al(III) in the growing of animals and cell cultures [1]. The first toxicological studies on Al(III) were reported by Siems and Doellken respectively in 1886 and 1887 [2, 3]. A revival of interest on aluminium biology raised when Alfrey and coll. [4, 5] proved a connection between aluminium and certain pathologies, such as microcytic anemia, osteomalacia and dementia dialitica, related to the dialysis treatment of uremic patients. Furthermore, a possible connection between aluminium, as an aethiological factor and Alzheimer’s disease (AD) was first hypothesised by McLachlan and coll., in the early ’70s [6] but the issue is far to be fully demonstrated and it is still matter of discussion and investigation [7].
