Abstract
The new Progressive life lens series - launched in the German market in’ 94 - more or less marked the end of the process of overall optimization of all-round progressive addition lenses (PALs) based on the present state of the art. This means that if we discount for the present the new versions based on different materials, there is relatively little room for the further development of conventional PALs for universal wear. However, new aspects are immediately opened up if it becomes possible to manufacture aspherical or atoric back surfaces under economically justifiable conditions.
