Abstract

In his contribution to a recent compendium of essays on enhancing the learning process, Malcolm Frazer, Chief Executive of the Higher Education Quality Council, agrees with the traditional view that good teaching must be underpinned by research. He lists five characteristics of a “Quality Teacher” in rank order, the first being

Up-to-date professional knowledge, skills and competence in the subject. This is the sine qua non for every teacher. (Frazer, 1992, p. 57)
