Abstract
This chapter states that the complexity of industrial development is such that human beings have only incomplete knowledge about appropriate material use and industrial processes. This makes it difficult to even ask the right questions about how the goal of sustainable development is to be achieved. This ignorance does not imply that existing research tools for industrial transformation should not be further developed. The author recommends that responsible material use is a key step towards industrial transformation.
