Abstract
Integrated effects of human activities have changed chemical and mechanical weathering and erosion rates in Europe. Environmental acidification by SO2 and NOx from sulfur dioxide (SO2) and nitrogen oxides (NOx) deposition and modern agricultural practices accelerate these rates, deplete soils of exchangeable calcium (Ca2+ and magnesium (Mg2+), and enrich them with aluminium (A13+ Such changes are associated with dieback of forests in Europe (Ulrich, 1981; Paces, 1985, 1986).
