Abstract
Over the last four days, we have heard papers on two related subareas of stochastic hydrology: Simulation and Forecasting. I shall attempt to give a brief summary of what I believe is the state of the art based on what I have heard and my own experience, and perhaps to clarify a few issues. My general objective will be to identify what we can do reasonably well now, what we cannot do, and where I think the best possibilities for advances lie.
