Synopsis
The racket sports are the fastest expanding of all leisure activities. Any participant is these sports knows, too, that there is nowadays an enormous range of rackets available, and that high-tech descriptions such as graphite fibre or ceramic fibre composite abound. In this chapter the pros and cons of these descriptions are analysed and discussed. In common with other advanced sports equipment, however, it will be found that the emphasis of racket design and construction is on optimum performance, combined with freedom from injury. The chapter concludes with details of the design and construction of tennis and squash balls; even these items have not escaped technology’s impact.
