Abstract
Anyone already experienced in the biology and classification of medically important insects or arachnids will probably use this book by going directly to a chapter which particularly interests or concerns them — without the need for a general introduction. However, students and others less familiar with arthropods concerned in human health might find it helpful to be provided with background reading of a general nature that is relevant to all the specialist groups of noxious arthropods covered in later chapters. This introductory chapter briefly considers the following general topics:
-
Classification and nomenclature
-
Species and species complexes
-
Distribution and zoogeographical regions
-
Vectors and vector status
-
Collection, storage and handling of specimens
