Abstract

The materials used in the pulping process and paper manufacture offer a favourable environment for the growth of microorganisms. This is unavoidable. In many cases the presence of microorganisms goes unsuspected and no harm is done. In other cases, however, microorganisms produce deposits, particularly slime, which is serious owing to the damaging effects of slime on paper during manufacture.
