X-ray studies using synchrotron radiation

  • Chapter
Characterization of Solid Polymers

Abstract

X-ray diffraction research on polymers has benefited considerably from synchrotron radiation. The high brilliance of synchrotron X-ray radiation has opened new possibilities, such as fast time-resolved scattering, simultaneous dynamic diffraction and DSC, light scattering or mechanical experiments, studies of single molecular layers by X-ray reflectivity, etc. In addition, a number of advances in X-ray instrumentation and method of analysis, initiated at national synchrotron facilities, have subsequently spread to many individual off-line laboratories. In this chapter we review the information on instrumentation useful to the synchrotron user, and also give a selection of examples of polymer application. The reader is also referred to reviews by Eisner et al. [1], Russell (specific to SAXS) [2] and by Gehrke [3].
