Abstract
We all have an intuitive appreciation that river water contains a variety of dissolved and suspended constituents. Mountain streams appear pure, farm creeks are often muddy with sediments, and drainages in limestone-rich regions are fertile while those containing only granitic rocks are usually less so. The rivers of heavily populated areas, and even the rain, are polluted by human activities.
