Abstract
Compared with other insects, chironomids are well represented by their remains in aquatic sediments, allowing palaeoecologists to reconstruct past changes in their abundance. Together with diatoms, cladocera and ostracods, the chironomids have contributed immensely to our understanding of past changes in aquatic environments (Walker, 1993).
