Summary

The establishment of true breeding lines is considered a critical step for cultivated variety development. Particularly in heterozygotic allogamous plants, such as apple (Malus pumila Mill), the establishment of homozygous lines offers new prospects for breeding. Isolated microspores may also offer an effective system for in vitro selection of haploid cells. Lespinasse et al. (1983) have discussed the potential of apple haploids in detail. The purpose of the present work was to study the potential of isolated apple microspores to develop in vitro.
