Abstract
All the waters of the Pantanal known so far, are well-buffered neutral or alkaline waters. This is due in part to the mainly sandy sediments of the wetlands which are very permeable and well aerated, not permitting an acidification of the groundwater (Wilhelmy, 1958). Also the terrestrial vegetation does not seem to be of the type which supplies much humic substances to the environment. But still more important is the fact that the Pantanal is surrounded by calcareous, often karstic mountain formations.
