Effects of Prostaglandins on the Respiratory System

  • Chapter
The Prostaglandins

Abstract

Until recently the inter-relationship of the lungs with prostaglandins has not been the subject of much investigation, but within the last two years not only have those investigating prostaglandin metabolism become aware of the importance of lung tissue in this respect, but also pulmonary physicians and physiologists have realized that prostaglandins may play an important part in the control mechanisms of bronchial and pulmonary vascular muscle tone, and may ultimately be useful in the treatment of lung diseases. Despite increasing interest there is still relatively little known about prostaglandins and the lungs, but it is now possible to report some important advances and to speculate upon future developments.
