The role of the cell wall in the life of the plant

  • Chapter
Physiology and Biochemistry of Plant Cell Walls

Part of the book series: Topics in Plant Physiology ((TPP,volume 2))

Abstract

For the plant cell, the cell wall is a frontier zone, where the cell encounters the challenge of the outside world. For the plant biologist, the cell wall is a research frontier, at which the old concept of a dead, structureless box has given way to a new picture of a highly complex structure performing a great diversity of functions in the life of the plant.
