Abstract
The relations reviewed in Chapter Sixteen seem to be of interest for the study of psychodynamics in psychosomatic medicine. Its polytonic relation to general adjustment, appearing in the distribution of the percentage ranks, points to the fact that in only about half of the cases with satisfactory general adjustment exists absence of psychosomatic complaints. The same is true for the relation of frequent complaints to unsatisfactory adjustment. This finding is in accordance with observations made by other authors that psychosomatic disturbances occur in apparently well-adjusted individuals as well as in maladjusted persons. The relations of psychosomatic complaints are conspicuous in their incidence with physical factors. They appear to exist in particular in respect to present emotional and other factors. This in contradistinction to mental health, which is related to present and past factors alike.
