The Publication of Jaques Massé

Abstract

Although a fair amount has been written about the ideas in Tyssot’s first novel, little attention has been given to the problems associated with its clandestine publication. As far as I know, only one authority, Professor Storer, has attempted an elucidation of the problems involved.¹ Therefore, before discussing the novel itself, I shall try, first of all, to establish which was the first edition and when and where it was published. Afterwards, I shall comment on subsequent editions that appeared in English, German and French throughout the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries.
