Abstract
The concept of thermodynamic equilibrium is fundamental. It applies as much to mechanics as to all physical phenomena. Equilibrium corresponds to the most stable state of a system. Any slight change from this state leads to an absorption of energy which makes the system in an unstable state; it then reverts spontaneously to the initial state by liberating the energy.
