The Second Part of Chapter 5 of the De Arte Mensurandi by Johannes De Muris

  • Chapter
For Dirk Struik

Part of the book series: Boston Studies in the Philosophy of Science ((BSPS,volume 15))

Abstract

Prof. Dr. D. J. Struik started the introduction of his A Concise History of Mathematics as follows: “Mathematics is a vast adventure in ideas; its history reflects some of the noblest thoughts of countless generations”. With this in mind I will give my contribution to Mr. Struik’s Festschrift on the propagation of Arabic science into the West by showing the influence of a twelfth-century mathematical text, translated from the Arabic into Latin, upon a fourteenth-century textbook.

For the authorship of this part see M. Clagett, ‘A Note on the Commensurator Falsely Attributed to Regiomontanus’, Isis 60 (1969) 384, and S. Victor, ‘Johannes de Muris’ Autograph of the De arte mensurandi’, Isis 61 (1970) 389–395.
