Abstract
Optical emissions from the atmosphere may be considered to have three aspects. First, that of exploration and identification; secondly, that of understanding the processes of excitation and emission, and thirdly, that of their exploitation in the study of broader aeronomic phenomena. These phases provide a convenient framework in which to summarize the material discussed.
