Abstract

What is the task of linguistic theory? A common answer to this question is: the description of the pairings of sound and meaning of words, sentences and texts in a language, and the explanation of how the complex system of pairings of a language can be learned by a child on the basis of its always limited exposure to stretches of sounds in the community using that language. It is usually understood that a fruitful and sufficiently complete solution of this problem is only possible on the basis of a fairly radical theoretical abstraction. In particular one has to abstract — as is usually argued — from the questions regarding the nature of the actual psycho-physiological mechanisms embodying the pairings as well as from the global constraints stemming from perceptual, operational, and cognitive procedures and strategies realizing the pairings in the organism.
