Abstract

Numerous commentators interpret the complex relation holding between the philosophical projects of Merleau-Ponty and Sartre primarily as a skilled and in-depth criticism established by the former with regard to the inadequacies of the philosophical system elaborated by the latter. Not only that: Merleau-Ponty unveils, as much as he successfully overcomes, the obvious limitations of Sartre’s dualistic ontology of being and nothingness with his unitary conception of the flesh of the world. He is therefore able to both critically examine the bifurcated reality model proposed by Sartre and definitely depart from its limiting and unfounded — although validated by a long philosophical tradition — belief that the binary opposition of inner subjective life and external objective world is basic and insurmountable.
