Abstract

The importance of school myopia and its accommodogeneous cause are unquestionable. In order to know which theory is right with regard to school myopia, axial theories or Sato’s theory, I took up, as a standard of estimation, ‘emmetropization’ (EM) which has a very close relationship with accommodation and school myopia. Sato’s theory can rationally explain EM by the braking mechanism of tonus. On the contrary, none of the axial theories can explain EM as they cannot contain the braking mechanism. A theory which is a compromise between the refractive theory related to tonus and the axial theory has not received support by comparing bony arm length, corresponding to axial eye length, of the dominant arm with that of the other arm.
