Abstract
The Danish prospective longitudinal perinatal project was begun in 1959 and is still in progress. The subjects for this project constitute a complete birth cohort; that is, all deliveries that took place at the State University Hospital of Copenhagen (Rigshospitalet) between 1959 and 1961 (N = 9,125). This paper describes a twelve-year follow-up study of a subsample of low birthweight (LBW) infants drawn from the cohort. The central purpose of the follow-up study is to compare the incidence of later mental retardation, reading disabilities, and emotional maladaptations of low birthweight infants with that of a randomly selected control group. In addition, the interactive influence of socioeconomic status (SES) on the relationship between low birthweight and the specified outcome variables is described. This study is a minor analysis presented as a context for the description of the perinatal cohort and as an illustration of the follow-up.
