Abstract
The possible role of taurine as a synaptically active substance has recently been investigated; however, its function still remains unclear. Taurine satisfies some of the criteria set for a neurotransmitter (Oja and Lähdesmäki, 1974), but so do a number of other amino acid transmitter candidates. Perhaps only γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) fulfills all the essential criteria.
