Abstract
In the 1970s there was an apparent drift towards Monetarism in the way in which a good number of national monetary authorities conducted monetary policy. Our aim in this paper is to analyse why this change took place, consider the extent to which it is a change in practice rather than just a change in the way policy is described, and to appraise the consequences of this for the way in which commercial banks conduct their business.
