Abstract

Elementary treatments of the representation of a.c. quantities by phasors depend on geometrical line diagrams, and complex numbers are introduced at a later stage as a means of making calculations based on the diagrams. For a general machine theory in terms of algebraic and differential equations the phasor, which can be an important aid to calculation for certain problems, must have an algebraic definition, as in the following paragraphs.
