Abstract
In this chapter, the role of inference in the proposed analysis of free adjuncts and absolutes is considered in detail. As a preliminary to the ensuing discussion, the formal semantic analysis of free adjuncts and absolutes developed in Chapters II–V is briefly summarized in section 1; as I show, this analysis provides a ‘mixed’ account of the semantic variability of adjuncts and absolutes, attributing equal importance to rules of grammar and language users’ inferences as determinants of the logical function of an adjunct or absolute.
