Abstract
The problem of humanism appeared late in the development of sociology. The founders of sociology — Saint Simon and August Comte, as well as their antagonist Herbert Spencer — despite all the other differences that divided them, were so deeply impressed by the nineteenth-century achievements of the natural sciences that they had no hesitation in applying the models and methods of the natural sciences to the new field of investigation: sociology.
