Abstract

Robustness properties of various variogram estimators are discussed. A closer look at the variogram is made and conditions for the traditional non-parametric estimator to be optimal is presented. Frequently occurring deviations from these conditions are discussed. An alternative robust variogram estimator is defined. In an empirical test, this estimator is found to be more robust towards the deviations than other frequently used variogram estimators.
