Abstract

Surfaces, grain boundaries and interfaces of inclusions or precipitates are a sink for elements dissolved in metals. The segregation of dissolved C, Si, P, Sn…to interfaces in Fe, Ni and other metals or alloys leads to an enrichment in the range of one or only a few monolayers at and near the interfaces. This equilibrium segregation is induced by the decrease of interfacial energy upon segregation, additionally a release of elastic energy occurs in case of the interstitial elements which are too large in size for the interstices, and in case of substitutional elements being larger than the atoms of the host metal.
