Abstract

On many types of ships the operation of a bow thruster can be most annoying for the crew. The reason is that a thruster is a very strong acoustical source which induces intermittent noise in the adjoining accommodation spaces. Further, a bow thruster is located in an area of the ship where there generaly are no other major noise sources. This means that the background noise level is comparatively low. Thus when the thruster is started, the noise increases dramatically. For example, on a typical supply vessel the noise levels in cabins in the bow close to a thruster could be increased by 20 dB(A) when the thruster is started.
