Myocardial Microcirculation in the Beating Heart — In Vivo Microscopic Studies

  • Chapter
Coronary Circulation

Abstract

In contrast to other microcirculatory areas, the coronary microvasculature is continuously exposed to myocardial contraction. Until recently, methodical difficulties in obtaining quantitative observations of coronary microvascular blood flow have prevented the formulation of a clear picture of the hemodynamics in the terminal vascular bed of the ventricular myocardium. Simultaneous measurements of pressures, diameters, and blood flow velocities in different parts of the coronary vascular bed are necessary to identify the variables which control hymodynamics of the coronary microcirculation, namely extravascular support and active vaso-motor changes.
