Abstract

The catalysis of coal liquefaction encompasses many reactions, conditions and catalytic and support materials. Catalytic processes for direct liquefaction of coal recently piloted or demonstrated such as H-coal, have used conventional hydrotreating or hydrofining catalysts such as alumina supported Co-mo1ybdate. There has been considerable interest in various iron compounds. Solid catalysts are recognized to act as catalysts, not with coal itself, but with liquids produced by the thermal pyrolysis of coal. Conventional liquefaction at temperatures above 400°C have been extensively studied and almost all catalysts stable at these conditions have been applied to coal liquefaction.

Recent studies have aroused interest in possible new materials which can serve as catalysts since the conditions for initial reactions of the coal to be liquefied are lower temperatures and pressures. These processes, such as acid and base catalyzed depolymerization reactions, may make the catalytic conversion of coal to liquid fuels feasible.
