Abstract

Redshifts have been obtained for galaxies close to the cD in the cluster A2029 in order to determine the fraction that are bound to the cD. No difference in the velocity dispersion of ‘core’ and ‘mid-cluster’ galaxies was found, however, suggesting that the bound fraction is small. Intriguing structure in the velocity field leads us to ponder the possibility that the present-day cluster formed from the decay of a binary system.
