Abstract
This paper is divided into three parts. The first outlines the place of Schütz in the phenomenological movement. The second deals with the role Schütz played in making phenomenology a going concern in North America. The third offers an appraisal of contributions Schütz made to phenomenology both as philosophy and in its application to the social sciences.
