Abstract

Metastasis to the central nervous system (CNS) is both a common clinical problem and a fascinating biological phenomenon. Metastasis to the CNS is also a devastating complication of cancer. Few symptoms are more disabling and frightening to patients and their families than neurological ones (eg., convulsions, dementia, aphasia, paralysis, incontinence). Adrenocorticosteroid hormones, radiation therapy and in selected patients, surgery, are the principle treatment modalities. With prompt diagnosis and appropriate management neurological symptoms and signs resolve or improve in many patients. Neurological improvement is often maintained until death from progressive systemic tumor. However, all too often, death and severe disability are directly or indirectly attributable to CNS metastasis.
