Abstract

Malignant neoplasms occur frequently in the recipients of organ transplants.* The intent of this chapter is: to review some reports from organ transplant centers as well as to include selected individual patients and to discuss features of some of the neoplasms and possible etiologic factors and mechanisms involved in understanding the early and most often fatal occurrence of an increased number of neoplasms in organ transplant recipients. The patients are those with transplants of kidney, liver, and heart. Although virtually all patients receive some type of immunosuppression, the details of treatment are not discussed. The neoplasms, with few exceptions, were malignant, and originated in the transplanted organ, from a preexisting neoplasm in the recipient, or de novo. The references cited in the text and tables have been selected as pertinent to the essential points of the chapter.
