Human activities and modifications of ichtyofauna of the Mediterranean sea: effect on parasitosis

Biological Invasions in Europe and the Mediterranean Basin

Part of the book series: Monographiae Biologicae ((MOBI,volume 65))

Abstract

In the Mediterranean Sea, the human activities which caused the greatest modifications in the ichtyofauna and its parasites were the construction of the Suez Canal, and more recently the development of intensive marine aquaculture.

The migrations of fish across the Suez Canal are constantly increasing and affect the local fish populations. Some holoxenous parasites have migrated with their hosts, and sometimes become well established. In the case of heteroxenous parasites so far there has been no successful establishment, due to the lack of intermediate hosts.

The development of marine aquaculture has caused a sudden and temporary increase in the intensity of infestation due to high densities of fish. The result is the appearance of pathogenic damage. Moreover, several phenomena of parasite transfers have been observed.
