Abstract

In the writings of postmodern thinkers such as Levinas and Derrida, our fellow humans are referred to as the “Other,” as a mystery which lies forever beyond my self and my measures. This paper intends to explore the implications of this postmodern perspective for patient care. (For earlier attempts at clinical implications of the “Other,” the reader may consult Heaton, 1988 and Gans, 1988.)
