Abstract
Imagine an ancient Hebrew shepherd, out in the harsh, limestoned, semi-desert countryside of Palestine, guarding his sheep at night; his eyes penetrating the clear, cloudless sky above this arid land. Where am I? Who am I? — This tiny speck of consciousness in a vast, glorious universe; and his wonder slides over into a prayer to Jahwe, whose creative hands, he believes, have made it all:
When I consider the heavens, the work of thy fingers, the moon and the stars, which thou hast ordained; what is man, that thou art mindful of him? and the son of man, that thou visitest him? For thou hast made him a little lower than the angels, and has crowned him with glory and honour. Thou madest him to have dominion over the works of thy hands; thou hast put all things under his feet . . . (Psalm 8; KJV).
