A Search for New Fe-Rich Phases for the Development of Permanent Magnets

Abstract

Melt-spinning has been used as a quick tool to search for new Fe-rich anisotropic phases in R-Fe-B(Si), R-Fe-C and R-Fe-Ti systems. In PrFe 9.8B3.2 metastable phase with Tc∼380°C has been observed which transforms to the stable Fe2B upon a longer heat-treatment. In R-Fe-Ti the two ternary phases observed are associated with the ThMn12 type structure. The high coercivities obtained in R-Fe-C(B) alloys are possibly due to the small size of grains and the presence of an unknown phase with composition R-Fe-C which is uniformly distributed throughout the sample.
