Abstract
Margaleff (1985) fittingly characterized the Mediterranean as being “an extremely complex residue of a very dynamic past”. For such a relatively small sea, the diversity of hydrographie regimes and of topography is without equal. At least 8 basins or “seas within the sea” are in evidence, not taking into account the satellite Marmara and Black Seas. Kiortsis (1985) recognizes as many as 13 or even 14 subregions within the Mediterranean proper.
