Abstract

Formation of water insoluble complexes between polyethyleneoxide (PEO) and polycarboxylic acids in aqueous solutions is a well known phenomenon. In certain emulsion polymerizations comprising carboxylic comonomers and ethoxylated emulsifiers circumstances are prevalent that favor a similar complexation between emulsifiers and carboxylic copolymers. In a previous model study of PEO-methylmethacrylate/methacrylic acid systems (J. Polym. Sci. Polym. Lett. Ed., (1987) 25, 29) it has been shown that complexation effects affect particle formation. In the present paper more evidence from kinetic and conversion measurements is presented to support previous observations. The unexpected finding that the presence of PEO during the emulsion polymerization of MMA also affects particle size is shown to be caused by (partial) incorporation of PEO inside the PMMA later particles. Furthermore, evidence is presented that strongly suggests grafting of PMMA onto PEO to be absent in these systems.
