Summary

In the air and precipitation quality monitoring programme (EMEP) under the Convention on Long-range Transboundary Air Pollution, laboratory intercomparisons of the chemical analyses of relevant samples have been performed since 1977 in order to ensure data comparability and control the participating laboratories performance. Although at the start of the programme recommended methods were described, several different methods have been in use since EMEP is based on national programmes in 24 different countries without a strict standardization. The present paper describes the organization of the intercomparisons and results from some of the individual test as well as some trends in the results during the eleven intercomparisons arranged up to now.
