A Method for Methyl Iodide Measurement in the Lower Troposphere

  • Chapter
Physico-Chemical Behaviour of Atmospheric Pollutants

Summary

The levels of methyl iodide (CH3I) have been determined over a coastal region of Western Europe, at the Pointe de Penmarc’h-Bretagne-France (53,10grN-7,40grW) during a preliminary campaign in July 1988 and a more systemetic study in June 1989.

We are using an automated sampling procedure by direct injection because of the very aleatory characteristic of methyl iodide recovery yield for various pre-concentration techniques. Methyl iodide has been measured by electron capture(EC) gas chromatography(GC) and was determined in the range of 0,1 to 2,5 parts per trillion(pptv). The temporal variation in the tropospheric abundance of CH3I suggests that there is a strong correlation between high concentrations of CH3I in air and the occurrence of algae at the coastlines of the Pointe de Penmarc’h as well as a significant correlation between these concentrations and the wind direction. All our results are based on more than 1000 measurements of CH3I during June 1989; the observed concentrations are of the same order or magnitude with those cited in the literature.
